Lash Lift vs Eyelash Extensions: Which Is Right for You?
If you want to wake up with effortless, put-together lashes, two treatments dominate the conversation: a lash lift and eyelash extensions. Both open up the eyes and shorten your morning routine — but they work in completely different ways, last for different lengths of time and suit different lifestyles. Here's exactly how they compare, so you can book the right one with confidence.
The quick answer
A lash lift curls and lifts your own natural lashes for a low-maintenance, natural result that lasts 6–8 weeks. Eyelash extensions add individual lashes on top of your own for noticeable length and volume, kept topped up with infills every 2–4 weeks. In short: if you want the lowest upkeep and a natural look, choose a lash lift; if you want maximum length and drama, choose extensions.

What is a lash lift?
A lash lift is a semi-permanent treatment that curls your natural lashes from the root using a gentle, keratin-infused solution. There's no glue and nothing is added — your own lashes are simply lifted and set into a fuller, wide-eyed shape, a little like a perm for your lashes. Many people pair it with a lash tint to darken and define the lashes further, which is especially flattering if your natural lashes are fair at the tips.
The treatment takes around 45 minutes, results last 6–8 weeks as your lashes naturally grow and shed, and there's no maintenance in between. At our London studio a lash lift starts from £55, or from £70 with a tint.
What are eyelash extensions?
Eyelash extensions are individual lashes bonded one by one to your natural lashes with a medical-grade adhesive. Because each set is mapped to your eye shape and the look you want, they're endlessly customisable — from a soft, mascara-like classic set, to a textured hybrid, to full, fluffy volume. A full set takes around 2–3 hours and lasts 2–8 weeks, with infills every 2–4 weeks to keep them looking full as your natural lashes shed. Prices at our studio start from £75 for a classic set, £90 for hybrid and £100 for volume.
Lash lift vs eyelash extensions: the key differences
The look
A lash lift enhances what you already have — it's the natural choice, ideal if you love your lash length but want more curl and openness. Extensions add length and density, so they're the better option if you want a noticeable, glamorous result or you'd normally reach for strip lashes.
How long they last
A lash lift lasts 6–8 weeks and gently relaxes over time, so there's no obvious "grow-out" line. Extensions also last several weeks, but because your natural lashes shed continuously, they need infills every 2–4 weeks to stay full.
Upkeep and maintenance
This is often the deciding factor. A lash lift is genuinely low-maintenance — after the first 24–48 hours you carry on as normal, with no return appointments needed until it grows out. Extensions ask a little more of you: regular infills, oil-free products around the eyes, and gentle handling to protect the bond.
Cost
A lash lift is the more budget-friendly option up front (from £55, or £70 with a tint) and needs no top-ups. Extensions start from £75 for a full set but include the cost of regular infills, so it's worth factoring the ongoing upkeep into your decision.
Which suits your lashes?
A lash lift works beautifully on most lash lengths, though if your natural lashes are very short the lift will be more subtle. Extensions can create length and volume regardless of your starting point. If you're not sure what will suit your eyes, that's exactly what a consultation is for.
So, which should you choose?
- Choose a lash lift if you want a natural, fuss-free enhancement, love your own lash length, or prefer not to commit to regular upkeep.
- Choose eyelash extensions if you want real length and volume, a more dramatic look, or lashes that make a statement for a holiday, wedding or special occasion.
And if you still can't decide, you don't have to choose blind — many clients try one, then the other, to see which fits their routine best.
